I have owned a 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport for about 5 years and it is an excellent vehicle for me, an off-road enthusiast. There are a few different models of Jeep Wrangler including the base model, generally with a 4 cylinder engine, 5speed manual, no AC or CD player etc. X Model, generally with an automatic transmission and six cylinder engine. The Sport edition is most commonly equipped with a 5-Speed manual transmission, inline six cylinder engine and selectable four wheel drive transfer case. The Sarah Model is a Sport with painted fender flairs, and a few other aesthetic changes. Some versions even come with a stronger and more desirable Dana 44 rear axle, usually accompanied by a ‘tow package.’ A Rubicon Edition is also available boasting the six-cylinder engine, Dana 44 axles front and rear, upgraded 6-Speed manual transmission, and stronger transfer case with a lower gear ratio.
Although almost every aspect of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler has been improved since previous models it is still somewhat unrefined by current standards. It is available with AC, CD player etc… but still no power locks or windows. Most customers realize these options are traded for off-road capability, or other notable aspects of the vehicle, such as the removable top and doors. You really can’t expect a vehicle with a roll bar and canvas top to be a luxury vehicle. Although the Jeep Wrangler appeals to many people for different reasons, it appealed to me because of its off-road capability and aftermarket support and relatively modern look (compared to previous Jeep models). The Jeep Wrangler is an extremely capable vehicle both off-road and on and could be the perfect vehicle for someone looking for a modern off-road vehicle, that they can drive to work everyday as well.
The Jeep Wrangler gets fair gas mileage compared with many other SUVs particularly when considering the amazing off-road performance of the Jeep Wrangler. On-road performance of the Jeep Wrangler is somewhat limited, but still provides good acceleration and fair drivability. The Jeep Wrangler looses some major points at highway speeds, passing and acceleration on the highway. That being said I drive my lifted Jeep Wrangler 85 miles on the highway twice a week, with no problems.
A Jeep Wrangler is not a perfect vehicle for everyone and lacks a few features that some customers see as required, such as the power locks mentioned above. It is also not a terribly comfortable vehicle, nor is it quiet on the highway. For the avid camper or off-road enthusiast these ‘down sides’ are not an issue at all and help keep the Jeep Wrangler more affordable. Although the Jeep Wrangler may not be right for every customer, it has an extremely loyal following, and is considered by many to be the best off-road vehicle available today. Many SUV consumers will find it lacking in comfort, drivability and other features that are commonly found in other other SUVs, and may be more suited for a larger SUV or one directed more towards comfort, such as a Ford Explorer or Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Wrangler is also extremely small, which to off-road enthusiasts is a strong point, but to the average consumer is a downfall, and many may need or want much larger vehicles such as the Ford Expedition or Toyota Sequoia.
