Sam013 on June 1, 2009 | Has owned a 2005 Toyota Prius

My family purchased a Toyota Prius a few years ago and has not regretted a single minute of it. Besides having to wait almost 6 months for one of these cars to arrive at the nearest dealer, the Prius has become more than just an energy efficient green machine. It has developed into an exciting adventure of maximizing gas mileage and passing SUV’s and trucks as they are forced to stop for gas. The in-car display features current miles per gallon as well as the total mpg’s for the trip. My father has a blast trying to top 60 mpg for a trip, but he has succeeded, simply incredible.

While the Toyota Prius may look quite small from the outside, sometimes referred to as an aluminum box, it really is quite surprisingly roomy inside. Guaranteed, my family is slightly below average height; but nonetheless, it is quite comfortable. We also own a Toyota Camry; and to be honest, I think the Prius has just as much leg room. I will say that the interior is slightly uncomfortable for my taller grandfather with a little extra meat built in.

Another major plus about the Prius is the hatchback design. While it may not be the most stylish, it certainly is efficient and practical. I can’t even begin to count the number of times we’ve fit mountain bikes or sleds into the back hatchback. Compared to a Toyota Camry, the hatchback design makes fitting bikes a whole lot easier.

One element that I have found to be slightly dangerous is the feature that cuts of the engine for a short period of time when your tires begin to spin. This may seem like a good idea in practice, but it begins to cause a problem when driving in the snow. When trying to make a turn, it is dangerous if the engine cuts off real quick and you’re stuck in the middle of the road. In most vehicles, the tires will eventually gain at least some traction and move into the right direction. Other than that, I have absolutely no complaints.

Maintenance on the Prius is less frequent and less costly than any other vehicle I have ever had. If you’re looking for a family car, don’t rule out this small, but powerful hybrid. My prius has gone through rugged terrain in Colorado, hot days in Florida, and even some steep inclines. It has never disappointed. Sure, it’s not going to pull a large trailer or a boat, but it gets the job done with 45+ miles per gallon. If you’re looking to save some money in the long term and preserve the environment for your children, this hybrid is an excellent choice.

I’d like to end by sharing a story about camping in this Prius. For most of my life, I have always gone camping in a pop-up camper pulled by a minivan. However, a tent became my new housing after the purchase of this Toyota Prius. As we all know, tents aren’t the best place to be when it is pouring down buckets in the great outdoors. Fortunately, you are able to fit two sleeping mats in the back if you put down the back seat. Both of our feet were barely touching the hatchback door and heads comfortably resting right behind the front seats. It is possible, surprisingly comfortable, and possibly even affordable if you only have two passengers for the night. Save money on a hotel and enjoy the great outdoors in your Toyota Prius. Lie down and enjoy the view of the stars through the clear hatchback.

The Toyota Prius is one with nature. Don’t pass up this opportunity. I would highly recommend this car. In fact, we’ve got the 2010 on order, not because we’re replacing the 2005, but because we’re getting two. It’s that good.
