The prior generation of the C-class seemed to be a bit of an experiment. Throughout its seven years, there were sedans, wagons, hatchbacks, and a whole bunch of different engines (including an odd supercharged 4-cylinder), many of which failed. The good news is that after all the trial and error, Mercedes basically took the stuff that worked and turned it all into a new C-class for 2008.
So far, only the two most potent V6 engines – the 228 HP 3.0-liter and the 268 HP 3.5-liter – have returned to create the C300 and C350, respectively. (A V8-powered C63 will be arriving shortly.) Most models will carry a seven-speed automatic and rear-wheel-drive, though all-wheel-drive and a six-speed manual are optional with the smaller engine. Sedans are the only body style this time around, and most of the mechanicals are pretty similar to the last model’s.
The new C-class supposedly improves upon its predecessor with more space and a more involving experience. Indeed, it is a little longer and wider, and space is up a tad in both the trunk and cabin. Mercedes also worked on the handling and steering, though it’s still no threat to BMW, and the C-class is now a bit heavier than it’s ever been. At least its prices fall within the realm of sanity – always a reason for celebration when speaking of a Benz.
All in all, there’s enough reason to earn the C-class a mild recommendation – assuming Mercedes has finally fixed its mediocre reliability.
