Where did it go?

K Olsen on February 23, 2009 | Has worked on a 2005 Dodge Stratus

At the beginning of the century Dodge introduced us to the Stratus. It was a sleek looking coupe with a little pep, perfect for singles or couples living in the city. The Stratus' life was short lived though and 2006 was the last year they where made.

When it came to style the Stratus was it. Long, sleek, comfortable and roomy for a coupe, the back seat isn't really for adults but a child or teen is fine back there. Dodge offered it up in both classic and more modern colors. Unfortunately it was made cheaply and the body and rims showed it with many dents, scratches and nicks. The interior also was easily worn down both the material and the plastic in places such as the vents. The ride is smooth; though there are times the engine seems to jump while stopped at a light. For a little car it handles ok in the rain and snow, but I would slow down because even with front wheel drive it will slip off the road if taking slick roads too fast. Winter tires help in the bad weather.

Though made cheaply the Stratus (minus first year) wasn't a badly built car. There are minimal recalls and service bulletins. Minimal is the key word though because there are some so make sure if you're looking to buy one or already own one to look for things such as issues with the fuel pumps (recall), transmission, engine sludge, cooling system and the AC seems to have a lot of issues.

General maintenance is a must. This engine will build up sludge if basic oil changes and yearly flushes are not done. Tune-ups will also keep the fuel mileage up in the 25- 28 MPG range. The cost is average ranging from $50- $80 depending on where you take it. Back yard guys will want a lift to do work, this is a coupe and it is low to the ground so even with a jack it's a tight squeeze. As for all the extras for this car, I believe simple is best, but nice rims and wider tires look smokin'.

I know that Dodge had it's reasons for taking the Stratus off the market but personally I like it and give it a 4. I just have too big of a family to have one.
