I bought a $4,000 98' SL2 Saturn with 120,000 from a dealership in Wausau, Wisconsin! I drove the car for maybe three weeks, I had the oil changed! Later that day my engine start making knocking noises... The next day I took the car in and my car was completely bone dry.. NO OIL! I immediatly thought it was because they did not put oil in, HOWEVER, I later found out that Saturn realized the SL series with Twin Cam engines had a problem with excessive oil use! You would think there would be blueish smoke coming out of the exhaust! But when they found out about the problem instead of recalling the series (which would cost lots of money) Saturn ("the good guys") designed a special exhaust system to lessen and hide the smoke!! I've been through two engines already and I havent even had the Saturn a year!! The Saturn company should be ashamed of themselves and relize how many people they ripped off!! What you save for in gas you will definatly pay in oil replacment!! Have fun!!

Burned (oil) Again on October 9, 2009
I bought the same year and model of Saturn as you did and had the same problem. Bought it from a private seller for $1300, drove it for 2-3 weeks, one day started making noises and found out engine was down 3 quarts. Kept driving it for another day until it was pretty much impossible to drive due to lack of compression. Really enjoyed the car while it lasted, fast with standard trans, great handling (on dry roads, at least) . Looked new inside and out. But this is the second used car I've bought in less than half a year where oil disappeared (other was 1995 Geo Prizm) and I"m getting !@ now. Yeah, Saturn scammed a lot of people with this excessive oil consumption problem. Which there was a class action lawsuit out there I could sign on to.

R u kidding me?! I bought a used 97 and started finding the same thing. No smoke, but getting a little tiny bit of oil drops from tailpipe.I like the car and it gets 32 mpg, but I would sure like to know how to at least slow it down. Otherwise it runs fine.
