2003 Mercedes-Benz C Class

Back in 1990 when J.D. Power released its reliability ratings the 3-pointed star was at the top, numero uno! Where are they now? Well, let’s just say below average. If you are looking for a Mercedes-Benz you are no doubt looking for a nice, luxurious car that is just “better” than a Honda or Mazda. I can’t say if it is better or not, that’s up to you but I will tackle the question of reliability. BTW, both of those cars are rated higher in the initial quality surveys by J.D. Power.

There are a number of issues with the C-class that you’d rather avoid. First I’d look at my review of the 1st generation C-class because most, it not all, of these things apply to the second generation cars as well. But just like you hear on late-nite infomercials “but wait, there’s more!” On top of the other issues there’s broken a/c controls, purge valves, alternators, batteries, lamps, power windows, ignition keys, door locks, audio systems, fuel gauges, suspension bushings, off-balance driveshafts, reprogrammed transmissions, malfunctioning sunroofs, and squeaks and rattles. Don’t expect any of these issues to cost less than a few hundred bucks to make right. Some of these issues can be very serious, leaving you stranded or even damaging other parts of the car when they fail completely, and others can be just a nuisance like the squeaks and rattles.

Am I picking on the C-class because I mention the squeaks and rattles? No, are you driving a Mercedes or a Kia here? (BTW, Kia rates higher than Mercedes in reliability, ouch!). Anyway, just like I mentioned on the 1st generation review, ask to see all service records and leave if they don’t have them. But if you get a nice example, boy do you have a nice car. There is nothing like driving a German luxury car. Solid, stable, quiet, just a very nice feeling.
