The 1st generation Tundra is a very good truck, but did you expect anything less from Toyota? Understand though, that there is no perfect car or engine from any manufacturer so I’ll share my experiences thus far.
The first generation did have some engine trouble. Starting with the most common things first (even though I say “most common” please don’t take this to mean they all will have these problems. The exhaust manifolds have a slight tendency to leak. This can cause an exhaust smell in the truck and can cause rough running. Normally you will hear a ticking noise as well. It’s going to cost you about $800 to replace a manifold. You may be able to remove the manifold and have it welded for quite a bit less money but the crack will re-appear if it’s not properly repaired.
If the check engine light is on, there are normally 2 common causes for this. The front O2 sensors can take an early leave of absence on 4.7L engines. You may notice fuel economy drop but more than likely it’ll just be the check-engine light that clue you in. If you need both O2 sensors replaced, they will be about $135 each (there are two of them) and one hour labor, about $90 today in my area. The other issue that normally turns on the check engine light is only affects the 3.4L engine. The mass airflow sensor fails at a bit higher rate than most other cars. If this sensor goes you will notice the truck not running quite right. It’ll take about $200 to make it right. These engine issues are common to all 2000 through 2002 model years.
There is an issue common to 2003 and 2004 model year trucks, all engines. The fuel filler tube failed and would leak…..not fuel but air! There is a system in cars today that puts a small amount of pressure into the fuel system and checks to make sure none of that pressure leaks out. It’s an emissions thing. Anyway, if that tube develops a leak the check engine light or emissions light will come on. The dealer will ask for about $300 to make that go away for you.
All-in-all, this is a nice truck that is has that legendary Toyota reliability.
