2006 Ford Escape - The Original Ford Crossover Vehicle

Chris Mayes on August 13, 2008 | Has worked on a 2006 Ford Escape

The original Ford Crossover vehicle, this was designed to challenge the likes of other manufacturers who were at the time coming out with the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Toyota version, the Rav-4. Platformed on a Mazda 626 chassis, this was the car meets suv and it was good. It gives the versatility to haul a family, while also providing the sportiness and quick response of any standard car.

Under the hood, Ford kept this one simple with only two main options. A four cylinder 2.0 which can also be seen in the Focus, and the six cylinder 3.0 which has been the power house for the Taurus for many years now. With the rising fuel costs the four cylinder is the main option for many people. One of the downsides to choosing this is that in the earlier models, it only came with a standard 5 speed transmission. For the automatic, you had to go with the six cylinder. Power is definitely a issue with the four cylinder pushing a mere 127 horsepower out, but for inner city driving and short trips it does the job. While the six cylinder is not a dragster, they did bump the horsepower to around 200 which definitely gives you the power you need for long highway trips.

One thing that should be pointed out on all models is that Ford has started to move away from the do it yourself mechanics. The engine compartment is small, and while basic maintenance is doable, any major repair needs to be referred to someone with a bit more patience, and a whole slew more of tools than the average garage holds.

Ride quality in this vehicle is a bit tricky. Most consumers are not sure what to expect. With the crossover style, this vehicle gives you a mix of SUV ruggedness with the quick steering, and responsiveness of a car. While the struts hold up to bumpy conditions, it seems they are possibly a little too stiff. While riding you will notice a bit of body sway, which will magnify the longer you own the vehicle. Alignment is crucial on this one, and it will effect the driving habits. The tires offered on these vehicles are still the standard 15 and 16 inch varieties, but the expectation is that this will change with larger tires becoming the norm.

In the end, this is a good family vehicle. It can cost you in the long run with mechanical repairs being needed by a professional, but if it is well maintained it can provide you with years of driving pleasure. Fun and sporty is how I would classify this. But as with any used vehicle, I would urge you to get a thorough vehicle inspection from a ASE certified mechanic prior to purchase. And remember, your vehicle will only treat you as good as you treat it. Keep on Driving....
