2005 Honda Civic

Honda has long been known for building reliable little econo-boxes. They were cheap, got great gas-mileage, but left a lot to be desired in the comfort department. But, as always, with modern technology the 2001-2005 Civic has shed it's boy-racer image, in favor of a much more mature style.

You can choose between two peppy 4 bangers: a 1.7 liter SOHC 115hp unit, or a 1.7 liter with Honda's trick Variable Valve Timing system called VTEC. These cars come stock with either a 5 speed manual, or the sometimes trouble-prone 4-speed automatic. Civics are available as a 4 door, coupe or hatchback. DX is the base model, while mid-level LX cars have A/C, power windows, power locks etc. The interior is typical older Honda - lots of plastic. But it is high-quality plastic and it feels well put together. Top-of-the-line EX models get the 127hp 4-banger with VTEC, along with a sunroof, bigger wheels and keyless entry. Plus, you do get more creature comforts than you used to.

The hot Civic Si package is only available on the hatchback. But it includes a 2.0 liter HO 4 cylinder with i-VTEC. This hot little number puts out 160hp, which makes the Si the most fun Civic to drive.

2005 model year things to look for: none

Basically, if you want a decent commuter car that's mileage friendly, but still fun to drive, the Honda Civic is worth considering.
