When I think of the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser I instantly think of retro styling and incredible off road capabilities. The independent front suspension with double wishbone design and rear solid axle with with four link and coil springs make my thoughts of incredible off roading capability an easy reality. The FJ Cruiser is designed for 32 inch tires and above average wheel travel. The short wheelbase allows the FJ to handle hills and uneven terrain with ease.
The 4.0 V6 engine boasts 239 horsepower and 278 foot pound of torque. There are two transmissions and two four wheel drive systems to choose from. The five speed automatic is mated with a transfer case that has 2-Hi, 4-Hi, and 4-Lo modes. The six speed manual transmission is mated with a transfer case that provides a center locking, but has no 2-Hi mode.
Fuel economy is an EPA estimated 16/20. I noticed after driving it for a day, I averaged 19mpg. The FJ Cruiser overall has great fit and finish, with very small blind spots and little road noise. The short wheelbase makes this a no brainer to me If I was choosing between the FJ and the new Jeeps. I highly recommend the 2008 FJ Cruiser to anyone looking for solid reliability pared with off road performance.
