The 2008 Volkswagen Jetta is the definition of economical luxury boasting new S, SE, and SEL packages to replace 2007's base and 2.5L packages. All models receive a 2.5L inline five cylinder engine with 170 horsepower and 177 foot pound of torque. The transmission options are either a five speed manual, or a six speed dsg automatic which features a twin disc clutch pack for lightning fast automatic shifting.
The spacious interior features options of anthracite, beige, or gray leatherette seating with matching carpet. The dash remains fairly similar to the 2007, featuring an optional navigation system with over 2.5 million points of interest on their map system.
Gas mileage is estimated by the EPA at 21/29 with averages around 25mpg if driving less "spiritedly". Upon driving the Jetta, the first thing I noticed was the solid feel of the vehicle and the ultra smooth shifting of the six speed dsg transmission. The brakes left a little to be desired, although abs worked wonderfully. Driver controls were easy to use, and the optional 10 speaker premium sound system felt like being front row in an orchestra. I recommend this vehicle for anyone looking for strong european performance at an economical price.
