The Mazda5 turns out to be just what every urban dweller needs - one part van, one part sport utility vehicle and one part economical people mover. The perfect "sedan with van doors." The SUVs/crossovers vehicles that I'd looked at had the same access issues as sedans or their foot print was just too big or not big enough and comparable vans were just not as well out fitted. The Mazda5 definitely provides more bang for the buck!
The 5 is stylish in design and flexible enough to accommodate a variety of tasks; toting groceries, hauling camping gear, and corralling teens and their friends all comfortably thanks to easily adjusted supportive seats. Teens didn't complain during short hauls in the third row seats.
The road worthiness and handling are up to typically underrated and excellent Mazda standards. Handles great in snow and ice and for a four cylinder, zips along just fine at highway speed. Crisp response from the transmission, firm steering and overall responsiveness make it fun to drive in all conditions.
Moon roof is great and interior features feel well constructed and not flimsy. Tested the Kia Sedona before purchasing my 5 and found the interior design and craftsmanship to be lacking.
Like the radio but would love 8 speakers and more power. Need better venting of AC/heat to rear passengers (understand that this has been addressed in the 2008 model) .
If you want the convenience of a van with out the big foot print and the style, utility and zip of a SUV then the Mazda5 is for you!
