The Chevy Prism, for its price, is an excelent vehicle. It handles well and has adequet power for climbing those hills. If u plan to race though, this is not the vehicle for you. Its styling is pretty bland; theres nothing great about it. For a small family, it is extremely reliable. There really are no worries about breaking down. You do get a good bang for your buck on this car.

CAUTION! I bought a 2001 Chevy Prism last fall. I was excited to find an affordable "Toyota" engine. I was sorely disappointed after driving the car for less than 6 months and finding out that this engine has the OIL SLUDGE proglem that many of the Toyota engines do. It is a costly fix and may never really overcome the problem. Buyer Beware.

    What oil sludge problem?

The car has oil sludge and consumption that is unfreaking real. No really, not just a disgruntled owner here, if used on long trips (more than 20 miles) the car will burn a quart of oil in 500 miles. This is not an exaggeration. I did not know till used 15000 mile full synthetic oil that went so low after 5k miles (really not that much) and I had to add more that 3 quarts. The light did not even come on!!! The valve train sounded like a diesel when I went around a turn moderate speed so I pulled over ASAP and checked the oil. Not even on the stick!! Then started filling with Mobile on extended performance thinking was only a little over a quart low and after the 3 quart got the willies. I did not know that I was literally 30 miles from seizing. Oh and that oil is extremely expensive. This was the first attempt with that oil. All the other oil changes were done 3000-4000 miles and I did not know how little I was draining out during the oil change. Trust me. Check this out. It is scary as there is no sign this is happening other than some rattling under the hood. Oh and there is Zero smoke or residue. This is scrubbed by the catalytic converter that will likely plug up at 130-140K. Game over!
