I have owned my 1997 Mercedes E320 for 11 years, and just recently sold it. This car gets high marks for styling and comfort, and low marks for numerous mechanical problems. I have had to change the O2 sensor twice, the window motors burned out easily and needed replacing, shocks and struts went out, several oil leaks needed to be fixed, lights consistently went out all over the car, engine had some problems as well. I put several upgrades into the car including custom rims and tires, clear side markers and front lights, tinted windows, and stereo system. Overall I would recommend the car if you have aa good mechanic.

i have been reading article after article indicating that the E320 is an award winning auto. is it all B S? I'm talking Motor Trend articles, Cars.com not to mention review after review from owners glorifing this car. now that i'm in position financially to consider one (used), i can't get my mind around it, that is, repair costs. so i'm leaving the mercedes search and now looking into a used lexus. i've concluded the benz is not worth it, you'll spend twice as much to fix it in the first year then you paid for it. in LA CA a used 1997 E320 listed used averages $8000 with 100,000 miles. i can only conclude that MB rushed this design an got it wrong. perhaps the pressure of the time got the best of them. anyone else agree?

I disagree. The 1997 MB E320 is by far the best car I have ever owned. I have taken trips on which the car got 31 mpg. In town, I average 23 mpg. This is the inline 6-cylinder, which provides great fun when you decide to find how much sports car you are driving. Nail the gas pedal and the E320 flies (of course not as fast as a true sports car but still with a lot of gusto.) Driving this car on the interstate is a dream. I had the good fortune of buying a low mileage, well maintained MB E320 a few years back. Get lined up with a good MB mechanic who can look it over before you buy. I have owned a lot of cars through the years including some American-made sports cars. The Mercedes is far superior in build and quality. Have you checked into the safety side of the MB line? Check it out sometime. The MB is one of the safest cars on the road. By the way, MB gets very few designs wrong. We now own two MBs and we're looking into getting one for a teen. Perhaps Lexus does build a great car and it does not require much maintenance. But there is just something about a Mercedes that is much mroe prestigious than anything made in Asia.
