    Those seat frames are way underbuilt, another bad idea for weight savings im sure. I have had to do major surgery to repair both of mine, welding and adding gussets and they still are lousy.

    It has broken about two years after getting the Jeep. It is broken in the back frame (poorly welded) and the plate that connects it to the base, is cracked, which I know one likley caused the other.

    I am about to spend $400-$500.00 to rebuild a drivers seat in a 2000 Grand Cherokee. I understand that on a vehicle there are parts that wear out and need to be replaced. The frame of the drivers seat should not be one of these parts. My frame came out in pieces. This is a safety issue related to the vehicle and should have been dealt with through a recall. I'm sure if that I am granted a response, I'll be told that since I'm long past a warranty there is nothing that Chrysler can do. Shame on you Chrysler. Shame on the big Three. Shame on you for engineering American made vehicles so poorly. Intentionally designing parts that break down and lead to future part sales and vehicle sales. I can promise you this, my next vehicle purchase will not be from the American big Three. As far as I'm concerned, the problems you are facing financially are a result of these business practices. You made your bed, lie in it.

    I am amazed that this has impacted so many people, and I thought it was due to me weighing in at 300lbs for a time. What about those folks that do not have internet access? Be interesting to see what kind of failure rates these seats have in accidents? Have there been fatalities due to this? It is quite apparent to be a major manufacturing defect.

    I found the needed parts (the track and frame) at http://www.wholesalemopar.com/. It'll run you about $500 for both. I had bought the track there a few months ago and, when changing that out (broken in 3 places) I saw that the bottom of the seat frame, a piece of stamped metal, was torn in multiple places. That has not essentially broken away as well and I just ordered a new frame. BTW, changing out the track was no problem. I'm hoping the frame will be the same.

    Mine just broke on my 1999 jeep cherokee sport. It looks like they used two different kinds of metal from the seat and the track... one is a soft steel and another is a hardened steel, whenever the temp changes outside the metals contract and expand at different speeds causing stress on the welds and ultimately causing it to snap and break. Also the design is insufficient, it is lacking the proper structural integrity around key points, most specifically the front left bolt. This is Chrysler's fault and they should recall this immediately before anyone is seriously injured.

    Mine is broken in 3 different places...it is more like an ejector seat than anything else at this point. Was thinking abut getting it fixed, but after hearing about them breaking multiple times and the cost involved, it's not worth it. With 173K miles on it it might just be time to put it out of its misery.

    I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Special Edition. The seat mounting frame broke just the other day. Is there a recall on this? Any suggestions for quickest/cheapest fix? I was going to check salvage yards before I go the dealer. Maybe an online site for factory direct purchase?

    I work for a repair shop on a car lot. There should be a recall on all of these seats. I tried a National Parts Locator for used parts, and every yard that I called said that the driver's seat track was broken. I ended up calling the dealer for parts, and at our cost it was $444.47 to replace the tracks and lower seat frame. All of the seats are broken in the same spot on every vehicle, the front left frame bolt, the metal of the frame cracks and seperates from the track. If someone were to be in an accident, the seat belt would serve no purpose. This is a frickin outrage that CHRYSLER should fix!!!!!!!!!!

    Wow.....hundreds of posts, this is amazing.'.

    I just fixed the driver's seat on my son's 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The "track / seat support mechanism", the motorized unit that adjusts the seat position is fine. The broken / failed parts are the sheet metal seat frame. The nuts that hold the frame to the track studs pulled through the thin sheet metal of the frame. The frame was pretty much trashed & the seat has be broken for a while (he doesn't drive that much).

    I finally got around to pulling it out of the car and taking a look at it today.

    If your seat problem is the "track / seat support mechanism" or failed motors; working units can be purchased on ebay for ~$150 to $200.

    If your seat problem is a failed seat frame;

    either the nuts on the mounting studs pulled through frame, frame sheet metal cracked or torn, or a broken seat back weld. In this situation the repair needs to get a bit more creative. Frame repairs need to assessed on a case by case basis. :(

    cheers Bob

    I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited. 116000 miles.My drivers seat bracket broke where a tube runs across the front of the bracket. The tube sheared off right inside the right front of the overall assembly.Dealer says very rare, will cost $1000+ to repair.From the above obviously not rare. I think I can machine a solid rod and insert it in the sheared tube piece and will end up with a stronger piece.

And I discovered that complete seat is "Sheet Metal" and offers very little in the way of support or protection during an accident or crash. I'm not an expert in Seats but I have over 28 years work with Aircraft Ejection Seats, Aircraft Crashworthy Seats and Aircraft Mounted Survival Restraint Systems...These Jeep Grand Cherokee Factory Seats are "Trash" and would "Not" protect any one during a crash of any speed....

    How many people are going to be seriously injured before someone issues a recall for this problem? I have been a service manager for an import manufacturer for 20 years. Trust me, if a known defect such as this ever happened, a counter-measured part would be designed and installed under a product update. They wouldnt even wait for the transportation department to issue a recall. Its called customer satisfaction. Can you hear that Jeep?? Its called customer satisfaction!! Wake Up
