Is this a good starter car for a kid?

Flag
From crazydriver on June 11, 2008

My little cousin's turning 18 and her mom wants to get her a good starter car. She's leaning towards the Rio, I would have thought the civic or corolla would be safer and better but apparently this car is pretty good and cheaper. What do you think - should she get it?

We bought a 2003 Sorento and a 2004 Rio. Both very good cars for us. Still have the Sorie and sold the Rio after 3 years to get a truck I needed. No regrets.

New driver will have problems getting enough power to join a freeway, or for emergency maneuvers. Civic would be MUCH better.

I am a beginner driver. This one seems too big for me. My husband is getting me a Picanto.

Get a smart fortwo. It only has two seats, so you don't have to worry about her having too many people in the car. It's one of the safest cars on the road, cheap to run, easy to drive and the cutest little car you have ever seen.

Buy an old beater for his first car. If it HAS to be brand new, then it's good, but why would you need a new one?

Do you seriously want to give a kid a 2008 anything for a starter car? ... uh no ... -Reasons: Higher Insurance Rate, Higher Repair Bills, and He/She will have tons of fun watching there brand new car gain scratches and dents in it as time goes by)

I'd say a used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla would suit them well — but even better is a used Subaru Impreza with all-wheel-drive (especially if they live anywhere near snow.)

There are much better quality cars out there including the Fit and Yaris - even the Focus and Cobalt are better. Look at some sites like Edmunds which give you cost of ownership not just initial purchase price. Also look at drivingtv.canada.com which has a comparison test.

im still in drivers ed at the moment so take my opinion as you will , but i think they'll be happy with anything and that any tipe of car would take getting used to and they'll have bugs with both but in time they'll get it down so yes this is good , so is the other either has ups and downs that make them both good and bad choices
