Is this car a good investment for a young driver?

From Lanie on September 22, 2008

My nephew is turning 17 next month and my family and I all agreed to pitch in and get him a car for his birthday. We found a great deal on this used VW Passat with only 65,000 miles on it. However, my newphew lives in a busy metropolitan area and will likely go to college and ssttle down to live in the same area. We want to make sure that not only will this car last him through college, but it will be safe enough to tolerate long trips through urban areas with heavy traffic. So, is this car a good investment to make for a young driver?

People love the Passat! The Jetta is also a good option (and cheaper)...

Yes! The Passat is an ideal vehicle for college. Very cheap for upkeep and makes a good transition from college to post-college. While a 17-year-old might not like it, consider a wagon...

At 75,000 miles you will have to replace the timing belt of the engine and it will be about $2,000. Hopefully the car is in good shape but if not, maintenance will be expensive. Depending on the engine, gas could be expensive too! There are newer more practical cars for a similar price point!
