I just had to have the alternator replaced on my 2007 Versa (65K miles).
Can driving with the headlights on all the time cause it to fail?

No likely. The headlamps are only drawing about 15 amps and I'd guess that alternator to be putting out in the neighborhood of 100 amps. Yes, they are making your alternator produce 15 or so amps that really aren't needed but I don't think that will shorten the life of the unit.
