what is the "hold" button that is next to the gear selector used for??

It allows you to hold the transmission in any gear. If you put it in second while pushing the button it will hold second. This could be usefull while taking off from a light in heavy snow.

Maybe if you were driving on the beach, or in a muddy place like your front yard. Honestly, in the snow belt of not I don't see this as a feature I'd ever use.

you aren't the only one!,, actually, i'm from northern ohio, and have spent many a day spinning in the snow, slush,ice etc.. and i honestly can't think of one single instance i would have ever, or ever would for that matter, use that hold feature ! thanks for the info ,, much appreciated !

i remember4 our 78 Country Squire wagon from Ford doing that if you put the transmission selector in 2 instead of drive....C6 transmission i believe
