Well, as a Miata owner myself I can understand the need for a few more ponies under the hood. Here's what I would do, and these tips go for any generation, any motor. The first thing I would do is replace the spark plugs and wires with a fresh set of NGK parts. NGK plugs and wires really seem to work well in the Mazda engines and are in fact the brand the factory installs many times. Replace the air filter with a new one, get a free flowing unit like K&N. Replace your fuel filter and if you’ve got 120K or more, run a tank or two of fuel through it with Lucas fuel injector cleaner. OK, now you’ve got ‘er running as well as the factory intended. There’s no point in “tuning” an engine that isn’t even up to factory specs. As far as performance mods to, the old adage “speed cost money, how fast do you want to go” is true. I’m assuming you aren’t looking at breaking the bank so I’ll tell you some of what I’ve done. I did a cowl-induction cold air intake mod where basically I cut a hole in the cowl in front of the driver, next to the wiper linkage. How the air is pulled from outside the car as opposed to the warm under-hood air. Cold air is denser and packs more oxygen, thus making (a little) more power. From there most will install a “cat-back” exhaust system. You’ll pick up 15-20% easily by doing these things. From there install the cat-forward exhaust and a mass air flow sensor from a Mazda RX-7. After that, you start really getting into some serious coin.

Are you looking for info to hop up the engine or just maintenance? There is quite a bit out there. As far as the good performance parts, Mazdaspeed makes good stuff, it's not cheap though. Let me know what you are looking to do and I'll help any way I can.

I changed the fuel filter like you said, but im not understanding the cowl induction can you tell me how to do that? i want a cold air intake but its so expensive im thinking about custom making one. What is cat forward exhaust ? and what does the mass air flow sensor do if i put it on my 1993 miata? thanks for replying

Sorry I just saw this missage. As far as the cowl induction, that is sorta tough to do. Go to flyinmiata.net and do a search for cold air inductin, CAI, and cowl induction and look at what folks have done. Cat forward is basically your down pipe. Most folks go with a "cat back" exhaust since it's easier and cheaper. You will get performance from a cat back, but if you also do a cat forward as well you will get more performance. The mass air flow meter determins how much air is coming into the engine and determins how much fuel to squirt. A different mass air flow meter will allow more air in, and thus more fuel as well. More air and fuel = more power!!!!
