The battery died and I removed the air filter but still find it hard to access the battery. Do I need to remove the front passenger tire in order to change it?

Access the battery on the '99 300M through the passenger side front wheel well. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, remove the cover, remove the air filter and then you can access the battery.
