Life of the Nissan Altima in miles...Will these cars go 200,000-300,00 miles, or are they somewhat unreliable?

Well, that's a loaded question but here goes. Just about any engine built today should turn in at least 125,000 miles with little trouble with minimal maintenance. But, let's try to do more than minimal maintenance. The most important thing for engine life is clean oil. So, keep your oil changed every 3,000 miles and your engine coolant changed every 2 years (or follow the manufacturers specifications in the owners manual) and will see well over 100,000 miles easily, in fact, I'd be surprised if you don't see 250,000 miles. I've had 3 vehicles with over 250,000 miles and currently am driving a truck with 364,000 and the engine is all original. What's the point of having an engine that runs forever if the rest of the car is a money pit? So, do yourself a favor and change the power steering fluid, brake fluid, and clutch fluid (if equipped) every other year and you'll go a long way towards avoiding failed brake components, power steering pumps etc.

Thanks for the information...what year is your truck? I drove a '88 maxima past 360,000 miles with original engine, and very few repairs to the 'replace-ible parts' on the car--all by replacing the fluids regularly. I am really wondering if the quality of new Nissans is like it was back in the day.
See, I have been looking into getting a new Altima, but I have read about a lot of rattling noises manifesting themselves in the first few thousand miles of ownership...and apparently it is a beast to try to get it taken care of. So because of all of the 4 cyl problems I have read about, I am questioning Nissan's manufacturing quality since they totally revamped the 4 cyl motor (around yr 2000?) and/or if they sink all of their R&D into the Maxima, or if the instances I have read about are isolated, but when all put together on 1 page they seem like an across the board issue. I don't know if you have an opinion about this, but if so I would be happy to hear it.
Thanks again!

My truck is a 93. In fact, the old girl has been sitting for 2 1/2 years and after putting in a new battery it started right up yesterday!!! As far as the new ones, I've only had good experiences but you have to remember my limited exposure as compared to say, a Nissan forum. Another thing to remember, if you read forums and what-not you are going to get a higher concentration of negative experiences. Most folks don't post "hey, my car has been very adequate" very often haha.

My 2002 Altma 2.5S 5 spped has 153kmi now. It runs as first day I drive home except more noiser. Never cost a peny fix it. Change oil every 3kmi, battery once, tires three times. One front light went off, however, got recall to fixed free.
