Not having seen the switch you are talking about I'm going to guess. I bet it's a lockout button (to prevent rear passengers from controlling those windows) or it could be a "all express down" button. VW has had both before.

the rear has no buttons, I've played with it just just can't figure out what it does. also I checked vin # @ the local dealer, says car has heated mirrors but can't find button, would they maybe come on when rear defrost is on ?

Heated mirrors comes on with the defrost. Can you describe that mystery button/switch?

defrost ? .... do mean the heated rear window ? On my daughters 97 cabrio highline. there are two window buttons on the dash that control the rear windows.(there are no buttons @ the rear seats). between the window buttons there is a thin button with a picture of a door window on it. the button seems to have no function.

I want to know also. It looks like a square with a little line coming out of the lower right corner. Kind of like a square Q

This is killing me! Someone get a picture!!! Fron Hgray's description, I'd guess it's for heated mirrors. That's a very common option on VW's, it's part of the cold weather package.

I just bought a '98 cabrio, and was wondering what this button was, myself. It looks like a window with up/down arrows, but I don't see any difference between having this button pressed or not. Has anyone figured it out yet?

OK, the button pictured is to lock out the rear window buttons so the kids in the back seat won't work.

i know on the Passat, the heated mirrors are controlled by the same knob you use to adjust the mirrors.

It must be to lock out the switches to either side of that button, though that makes no sense to me, ( but I'm not german). When you find out, let mem know.

I have a 96 cabrio and I have tried the 2 buttoons and have no idea what they are for either. If you get an owners manual its not there either. I am going to try at the dealership. It has a key on it and I thought maybe it locked the doors...wrong....I hope someone finds out and posts what it is :)

The button shown in the pictures posted by barryjay do not look like the one I have. Mine is in the same place (between the rear window up/down buttons) and is the same size and pushes in and out like that but the picture on it looks like a square Q. I tried to take a picture, but it was fuzzy. I will try again with my better camera at some point.
