Part of the reason can be found here: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml where you'll see that the old EPA highway test schedule is quite unrealistic for most people. Top speed of 60MPH, with extremely gentle acceleration and an average speed of 48.3MPH.

However, even the 4WD 5 cylinder engine on the Canyon shouldn't be getting this poor mileage, unless you're driving consistently above 80 or so. Wind resistance increases as the square of the speed, so you burn lots more gas at higher speeds.

If the engine is running rich, it's dumping more fuel in the engine than there should be. Let's assume you've been getting this poor economy for a few months at least. I'd pull the spark plugs and take a look-see. If they have black soot all over the ends then it's a safe bet that the engine is running rich. I'd take it to the dealer soon to have that fixed as it could clog up an catalytic convertor as well.

I have a 2007 2wd 4cyl regular cab Canyon that I bought brand new and no matter what fuel I burn or how I drive it, I get 15mpg in town and 17-18 on the highway. On a recent 3hr trip, with a slight head wind I got 16.6mpg, but only got 18 on the way home with a similar tail wind. Regardless, I do not speed, I don't accelerate hard at all (it's a 4-banger if I was going to, I'm in the wrong truck in the first place), and everything was broken in from day one by the book. Upon taking it in to the local GMC dealer for unrelated warranty repairs (headlight collecting moisture), I asked them to check into the poor mileage. They checked the computer for trouble codes and checked the GM tech line only to report that that is "just what they get." My 2001 cherokee 4x4 4.0 with 110,000 miles I traded in got noticably better mileage. Regardless of what words they want to feed me, there is NO reason for this truck to get this sort of mileage. I have been around cars, trucks, and bikes my whole life. I have worked as a technician, been in sales both automotive and motorcycle/ATV, and was a parts manager for AutoZone for several years as well as being raised in a family of engineers. Bottom line, it is a poorly designed powerplant. It may be the "most powerful 4cyl in it's class," but 15mpg is inexcusable.

I have a 2005 canyon crew cab 5cyl with 60k miles and I get 17-18 around town and 22-24 on long trips. Do you keep it well maintained?
