Question of the Day: Do you get your car serviced at a dealer, independent shop, or do it yourself?

I do things myself-ish. Helps when your best friend is a mechanic…

I mostly do all my own work, but I don't do oil changes. Don't like to mess with disposing of the old stuff and why bother when I can have it done for less than $30?

However, I too have a friend that's a great mechanic, actually the manager of a local independent shop. I've started to use him when I simply don't feel like it (which is more and more these days :-P).

For cars less than 7 years old I take them to the dealer or independent shop. If it is warranty work, then of course I will take it to the dealer. If not I'll take the vehicle to an independent speciality shop that I trust. Custom Alignment is a great example of a speciality shop I use. These guys fixed my F350 alignment when the local Ford dealership said there was nothing they could do about it.

For my cars that are more than 35 years old I do all the work myself. For the bigger jobs like engine swaps, or frame & suspension fabrication, I can usually recruit a friend or two to help out and make the work more enjoyable.

I'm an ASE certified tech, so of course I do my own stuff (at home, in my garage). I had to let the dealer replace my engine (under warranty) and I hated it. They got the thing soo dirty, there was grease everywhere. I don't know how anyone could leave their baby with someone else.
