I need to replace tires on 2008 BMW 528i in 5K miles. Would you recommend replacing with the same Continental Conti-Touring 225/50 R17 tires that came factory-installed or something else? (I currently live in North Alabama where the temperatures are not real extreme - generally no snow/ice.)

Tires are a very subjective choice and are different for each model. There are really two questions here: 1) How did you like the Continental tires? 2) What do you want out of your tires? If you answered #1 with "just fine" then just get them again. Those tires were with the engineers had in mind when they designed the suspension for the car so they are the best compromise. If you want more out of your tires than they provided, then the answer to #2 becomes more important. I'd visit some BMW forums and talk with other 5 series owners and see what tires they have and how they liked them and go from there.
