Chevy Cobalt steering problems

The Chevrolet Cobalt has a serious issue that can be dangerous. The car has electric power steering, not the conventional hydraulic system that has been around since Moses parted the Red Sea. Chevrolet changed the power steering system from the conventional hydraulic to electric to help increase fuel economy. The problem seems to lie in the power steering motor. The motor shorts our or develops on open circuit and you loose power assist. This happens while driving down the highway or when pulling into a parking space without warning. This typically requires replacing the motor or the steering column that it is mounted in. I've seen reports of as little as $800 to fix it and as high as $2400. As of yet, there is no recall and only a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) to help the tech diagnose it. If you are having this issue, I'd recommend reporting it to NHTSA at www.nhtsa.dot.gov

Chevy should be ashamed for not yet calling a recall on this. I have a 2005 Cobalt and I can't wait to get rid of it!!!!!

I'd say you folks should get in contact with NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) and make your voice heard. NHTSA is the organization that prompts the auto companies to issue recalls. They are aware of this, but alot of the determination comes from the number of complaints.

Very serious safety concern on my mothers 2006 Cobalt! The steering decided on its own to pull hard to the left, then super hard to turn in either direction! For seniors or anyone with diminishing strength would in no way beenable to straighten this car back to straight! Shocked me to think this turns into oncomming traffic! Where should we go for help on this?

I agree, this is as much a safety concern as would a .22 shotgun going off under your dashboard. I mean cummon GM. Anyway, I'd start a two-fold attack. Contact the dealer, the first time explain that this is a safety concern and that your mom's car. Tell, then that they have one chance to fix it correctly. After that you will be contacting NHTSA here: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm as well as your state attorney general and state representative. Be polite and professional with the dealer and everyone you talk to. But if you say you are going to do something (like contacting NHTSA and so on) do it, then send a copy of that letter or a transcript of the phone calls to the following people at the dealer: Service Manager, General Manager and the owner of the dealership. You need to make sure they know that you mean business. Now, at this point, the repair MAY be out of their hands but that doesn't matter. If you are putting heat on them, they will be putting heat on GM to get this fixed and now!

My daughter totaled her 06 Cobalt in June 08 at about 65 mph. Steering quit and car "wouldnt go where I steered it". And then on its own veered hard right, off the road, up and embankment and rolled over a couple of three times before coming to rest upside down. Because of the crappy roof design, they had to break the seat and drag her out the back window. Thank God there were no permanent injuries but its a only a miracle that she and my younger daughter (also a passenger) werent killed. I filed a report with the NHTSA within a few days.
Thing is, just yesterday, 11/19/09, I got a phone call and email stating they were gathering data on Cobalt power steering issue.. My suggestion, if you have had any problems, accident or otherwise, go the the NHTSA website and file a complaint
