As far as a diesel, I'd ONLY recommend the Dodge. The Ford and Chevy engines each have issues that creep up regularly, the Dodge cummins is VERY stout and reliable. The Ford and Chevy engines were designed and build for what they do, haul and tow in a passenger truck. The Dodge is actually designed for school buses, cement trucks, bull dozers and the like. In a passenger truck the engine isn't even breaking a sweat. The cummins will last 500,000 as the rule, 750,000 will hardly raise an eyebrow and 1,00,000 isn't unheard of. Of course, this is assuming you maintain, and drive it. I see lots of old Dodge trucks that are 15 years old and have 120K on them. I wouldn't want one of those. My current tow rig is a 93 Dodge with the cummins. I have 355,000 on it and it starts like it did when it had 35,000 miles. As for fuel economy, this is another area where the Dodge wins. My 93 get's 22-23 mpg on the highway empty, 20 or so loaded (pulling 7,000 lbs) and in the high teens around town. Guys with the Ford and GM trucks get 20% less than that empty, and 25% less loaded.
