I drive a lot of miles, my manual trans only lasts about 120,000 miles, then goes out. Is there any tricks to getting them to last as long as the motor?

I've NEVER had a manual trans last less than 150K. Do you change the transmission fluid every year? It's either a weak trans or a abusive driver.

yes on the oil change, I drove a toyota for 300,000 plus on the same trans and clutch before the Hyundai, so I am a little confused. I was wondering about maybe adding a pump and cooler to it,,,seems like over kill, but!!!

I'd guess that the trans temp isn't your problem. I haven't heard of any real problems with this trans, but I'll poke around a bit. But it really sounds like a sub-par transmission to me.

thanks for the reply, the factory one died at around 120,000 and the rebuild made it about 10,000 extra miles, I'm a gezzer (60)and just drive long distance a lot.

Depending on exactly what failed, it could (the second trans that is) be an installation issue. If the guy put the transmission in and had it cocked to one side so the pilot shaft didn't set in the bushing/bearing correctly, that could cause issues. In fact, there are a few things that could have been done, less than right.

turns out all the so called PRO's that gave me est's to fix it were very wrong. I noticed the other day when I started the motor to keep it fresh till the trans was replaced, that the grinding noise was coming from the wheel on the passenger side! I just had a duh moment, I replaced the half shaft last weekend, and I am back on the road. Never was the trans, I drained the trans oil and replaced just in case. The oil was still very clean, even dragged a magnet through it, very little matrial on that. So my CV's gave out at about 230,000 what a shock!!!thanks for the advice and checking into this, I feel like an idiot to have trusted so completely what I was told by the local repair shops!

Well, you learned two things. #1) you are a better mechanic than you gave yourself credit for, and #2) every professional mechanic will make a mistake here and there. It's never a bad idea to get a 2nd opinion.

Good job on getting it diagnosed AND fixed yourself. Feels good, huh?
