road vibration concern

I own a 2006 Jeep Wrangler X (automatic) that I purchased 2 years ago with 1,700 miles. A year later, I started experiencing road vibration and had the rotors and brake pads replaced. Because of a maintenance mess up they ended up cutting my rotors and replacing my brake pads. Just recently the road vibration came back, so I had the brake pads and rotors replaced again. However, I still notice the road vibration. Sometimes when I hit a small bump in the road the wheel and front tire vibrates. Other times when I'm driving over 50 the vibration starts again. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this problem.

First things first, I NEVER turn (or cut) Jeep rotors. I am ASE certified and spent my first years wrenching at a Jeep dealer and once you cut them, they will warm if you just look at them wrong. But on to your problem. There could be many issues here. Rotors can warp for many reasons: 1. They are too thin, thus warm under hard braking 2. Wheels were not torqued correctly (VERY, VERY common) 3. The lug nuts weren't tightened in the correct order 4. The rotors were hammered off when they were serviced 5. You have mud built up behind the wheel spokes 6. your steering dampener is bad
What size tires do you have? How often are they balanced and do you go off road? If you go off-road (you better, you have the best vehicle for it) then I have a tip for you to balance your tires......

Thanks for your response. The tires are stock 225, 75 R15's and they were recently balanced when I had the new brake pads and rotors replaced last month. I had a feeling when they cut the rotors last summer and gave me new brake pads they would wear a lot quicker. I haven't taken the jeep off road yet, although I would like to at some point.
I trust my new mechanic, but I wanted to get an idea of what the problem was before I take it back for more work. I will definitely have him check out the steering dampener. Is that also know as the steering stabilizer? I have heard other people mention that it could lead to vibration. My biggest concern is when I hit a bump in the road, the steering wheel shakes for a couple of seconds. Also, I notice a slight vibration when I get up to 50-60 mph. Thanks again for your time!

Renee, I'm glad you have a mechanic you can trust. That's so important. So many folks jump from tech to tech looking for the lowest price, they never build up a relationship with the mechanic, and worse yet, the mechanic never really get's a chance to learn the vehicle. If I've been working on, say your Jeep, for years I know everything that's been done to it so I won't waste your time or money on a repair that was done a year ago by someone else. And just like any other service profession, the tech is much, much more likely to give you a break or help you out if you are a regular. The steering dampener and the steering stabalizer is the same thing. It keeps your tires from wiggling back and forth after a bump. It's a normal wear item and needs replacing after a while, just like a shock absorber. BTW, when you take if off-road, you will love it! The Jeeps are so capable that each time you go off-road you will find you can tackle more and more tough obstacles.
