I am looking for a vehicle for my daughter who has just graduated from college. She plans to attend graduate school and I don't know which one is better suited for her.

I've driven both these cars at length, and the S40, even in 2.4 guise, suits my personality more (I'm over 40). The Tib is a great driver's car, though, fun to drive and well made, but it's targeting a younger man than I.

Seems like since you are on this site you are a car person, so I think you would enjoy driving the Volvo much more. Be sure there is a warranty and/or an ext. warranty just so you are covered should anything happen.
The Hyundai will probably cost less over the long term for maint/insurance however it will not be as nice and be a bit boring to drive daily.

the mazda3 is just as reliable as the s40 cheaper and its built on the same platform. try out the mazda3 thats a car with style and youth

So much more applicable use in the Volvo. It's better for passengers and moving stuff. More reliable and has a better brand identity so it'll help with the ladies.

Not sure about your daughter's future plans, but I got a sport coup my senior year in high school, and still have it now 11 years later. It was fine in college but now with a family it's a real pain. My brother on the other hand chos a 4-door car when he started college, and it served him well into his family years.

Obviously the Volvo is riding in style, much safer, and has a smoother ride. But it comes at a price. The Hyundai is cheaper on repairs and under a great warranty, Hyundais are pretty good all around, though it's no luxury model.

These cars are apples and oranges, but I'd probably go with the Hyundai. Like Stergios said, invest the difference into something that's not a depreciating asset.
