First car for my kids

i'm looking to buy a second car as my kids are hitting driving age and one isn't going to be enough. I don't want something very pricey but I want them to be safe and to like driving it. It's also got to be comfortable as I might use this as my commute car (since it'll likely get better gas mileage than my suburban.) Anyone have any thoughts on these two?

this what i think if your looking for a car for your kid i thinking you shoud consider safety.Chevrolet Cobalt has this the Chevrolet Cobalt is a mixed bag. In contrast to some cars in this class, rear disc brakes and ABS are optional except on the highest trim levels. Side curtain airbags became standard for '08, while they were previously optional. When equipped with the side curtain bags, the Cobalt has scored quite well in crash tests.and it have rarely been known for the quality of their interiors

I had a cobalt and got hit in the front corner by someone running a red light at 35-40 mph. The car was a total loss. very weak construction. Great feeling car, but I wouldn't feel safe driving another one.

Neither, in my opinion, but if I had to choose one it would be the Focus. I've driven (and reviewed) both. The Cobalt is too tiny, it's uncomfortable and screams "economy" every chance it gets. At least the Focus tries a little bit. It's got "cool" features, but is low quality in build. Panels don't align, doors feel wobbly, and it feels cheap all around, but it's drivable. I'd lease it.

One more thing. Keep in mind that the average driver in the US still thinks that diesel fuel produces that crazy black cloud from the exhaust so from a pure numbers prespective, the Prius will win. You are in essense comparing David to Goliath. Check out www.biodiesel.org while you're at it.
