Recap: #carchat 28; September 17 @ 8PM EST
Banovsky on September 17, 2009
Social media is such a cool thing that we're constantly evolving how we communicate. Take #carchat: the first few originated out of a spirited conversation.
Since #carchat is ever-evolving, we've included the recap here on vLane as a discussion thread, and we feel it suits the nature of the discussion well — and you can see that we had a huge response over two hours — despite Twitter being down for half of it!
Anyone can join us each week at 8PM EST on Twitter. And if you'd like to suggest topics, please tag articles on Delicious.com with "carchat."
We had:
- Discussion: The cars of the Frankfurt Motor Show
- Discussion: Why do car companies only launch products at car shows? (thanks, @aolautos!)
- Discussion: Reinventing Buick's new slogan (thanks, @joelfeder!)
- Discussion: The Nelson Piquet Jr, Renault Formula One "crash-gate" (thanks, @sjglynn!)
So? What are you waiting for? Click through to the recap.

Upcoming: #carchat 13; June 3 @ 8PM EST
Banovsky on June 1, 2009
GM is bankrupt!, GM is bankrupt! GM is bankrupt! The more I write it, the stranger it gets. Sort of like finding out that once-rich uncle lost everything in a game of poker in Hong Kong and will now be sharing your basement with the rusty chest freezer and knocking water pipes until he "gets on his feet again." Oh, and once a month he trundles upstairs to collect his welfare cheque "signed by the President himself." In this case, truth and fiction are blurred like a wheel-weighted Chevrolet Camaro burnout.
The agenda? How will GM sell product in the next 90 days (Thanks, Tino!), what you want to see from "Good GM", and some more used car buying tips. Remember, we talk about what's top in our minds, but love helping out car shoppers and "normal people" who don't count sniffing Ultra 94 as one of their favourite pastimes.
Check out the #carchat How-To, or click through for a #carchat widget. Anyone can join us at 8PM EST June 3, on Twitter. And if you'd like to suggest topics, please tag articles on Delicious.com with "carchat."
This week:
- Discussion: GM is bankrupt… Now what?
- Discussion: How will GM sell product in the next 90 days?
- Discussion: What do you want to see from the "Good GM"?
- Discussion: Used car-buying tips #usedcar
So click through and read a few links related to tonight's discussion. Note: A recap of last week's #carchat will be up soon.

Recap: #carchat 6
Banovsky on April 17, 2009
This week's #carchat was about the mammoth topic, "The Future of Automotive Journalism." There were laughs, there was crying (wait, was I the only one?) but most of all, it was enjoyable to see the different opinions expressed.
For the first time, #carchat was
trending on Twitter!
But before I get into the best tweets from the chat, I'd like to thank @jwnichols, @stradablog, @emiltsch and @mark_atkinson for the positive writeups about #carchat on their blogs.
Perhaps "The Colonel" (Tino Rossini) said it best when talking about #carchat:
"The Internet facilitated the dissemination of information in the auto industry, Social Media might finally effect the changes that the Internet has not been capable to execute."

How-to: #carchat
Banovsky on March 25, 2009
Since #carchat is an incredible use of social media, and is not just about "car guys", it should be enjoyed by all. So here's a quick and easy "How-To" on #carchat…it really is this simple.
How to follow a discussion on Twitter
Three easy steps if you want to join Twitter and participate in #carchat:
- Sign up for Twitter
- Load up Tweet Grid in a new tab in your web browser.
- Use your Twitter login on the Tweet Grid page to reply or say something about #carchat. Reply directly to someone during the discussion by putting an "@" in front of their Twitter name. Be sure to add "#carchat" at the end of whatever you say during the discussion, so that others following along can read what you've written — or questions you may have asked. When @michaelbanovsky, the friendly neighbourhood moderator, uses [[TOPIC]] it means that the topics will be changing.
Or one very easy step if you'd just like to follow along:
- Load up Tweet Grid in a new tab in your web browser, and follow along at 8PM EST. When someone uses "@" it means they're replying directly to someone else.
Oh, I almost forgot: Don't forget to look at the preview of this week's #carchat.
