Chevrolet Caprice police car to criminals: don't run
Banovsky on October 5, 2009
Usually, police cars are slow and ponderous. Sure, there's the old adage, "You can't outrun the radio," but let's face it: if the officer doesn't get a look at your Lamborghini, there's no way the wheezy 240-horsepower Crown Vic he's driving will catch you. That may soon change with this, the
Holden StatesmanChevrolet Caprice police car.Imported from Australia, the Caprice will be sold only as a police car. Equipped with a 6.0-litre V8 engine, it'll hit 60 in under six seconds — far faster than most other dedicated police vehicles.
Some features:
- Powerful 6.0L V-8 with fuel-saving Active Fuel Management technology and E85 capability delivers expected best-in-class 0-60 acceleration (sub six seconds) and top speed; a V-6 engine will also be offered, beginning in the 2012 model year
- Optional front-seat-only side curtain air bags allows a full-width rear-seat barrier for greater officer safety
- Two trunk-mounted batteries, with one of them dedicated to powering various police equipment
- Designed for five-passenger seating, meaning the upper-center section of the dashboard can be used for equipment mounting without the concern of air bag deployment interference
- Compatibility with in-dash touch-screen computer technology
- Special front seats designed for the long-term comfort of officers whose car is their effective office, including space that accommodates the bulk of a typical equipment belt

Wow: The 2010 Bugatti Galibier 16C Concept
Banovsky on September 14, 2009
Although Bugatti's current president, Dr. Ing. Franz-Josef Paefgen says that this Bugatti Galibier 16C "is one of several concept studies with which the company is considering for the future of the Bugatti marque," we can't help but think it's a brilliant car that should be built.
How stunning is this car? The body is constructed of handmade carbon fibre parts coloured dark blue so that when illuminated, the woven structure shimmers through. The front fenders and all doors are made from polished aluminium.
What else? Beneath the butterfly hood (which folds back from both sides), is a 16-cylinder, 8-litre engine with two-stage supercharging…that can run on ethanol. Bugatti says, "four-wheel drive, specially developed ceramic brakes and a new suspension design enable the agile, always-sure handling of a saloon of this size."
Inside, the dash is simple but luxurious: two centrally-located main instruments keep even the rear passengers constantly informed of the actual speed and "previous performance." (Women always keep track of that, anyway… -Ed.) Bugatti says that Parmigiani, the Swiss maker of fine watches, created a removable Reverso Tourbillon clock for the car, which may be worn on the wrist thanks to a cleverly designed leather strap.

The almost subtle Lumma Design Mercedes-Benz E50 CLR
Banovsky on September 1, 2009
Sure, it's not as cool as the old school-tuned Mercedes-Benz, but the Lumma Design E50 CLR is pretty nice. The bodykit is a bit busy, but considering how gaudy most tuned Mercedes-Benz models look, we'll go easy on this one.
OK, the goods: new body kit, integrated running lights with optional LEDs, and a lightweight trunk lid. Under the hood is a massaged V8, producing up to 450 horsepower. The new exhaust should make it sound great, too… Power gets to the road via 20-inch rims.
Inside, standard Mercedes fare, apart from the sport pedals, "unique mats", and different speedometer font. Really.

Swede dreams: 2010 Saab 9-5
Banovsky on August 30, 2009
We've profiled both Saab's bad times and good times here at vLane. But one thing holds true: we love it when Saab produces a "real" Saab, completely fresh in thinking and approach. The new 9-5 looks like one of those cars.
I mean, just look at it. It's clearly more aircraft-inspired than past models, especially with the "wrap-around" windshield look. Underneath, it shares its platform with a few GM cars, albeit with a modified wheelbase. Power comes from turbocharged motors, either 4-or-6-cylinder, 200 horsepower up to 300 hp.
The interior is amazing, too. A heads-up display, integrated navigation system, adaptive headlights, and adaptive cruise control ensure that it lives up to the expectations of drivers around the world.
All versions are available with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions — and — in front or all-wheel-drive. Look for the latest "big" Saab in showrooms next summer.

Video: 2010 Subaru Legacy B4 race car
Banovsky on August 28, 2009
Sure, we've reported on the 2010 Subaru Legacy. We've even driven it, and we love it. But…in Japan, they'll be racing it.
Sure, it's not exactly what we'd call "production-spec", but the Japanese GT series, or Super GT as its known, is pretty open when it comes to rules. That's why in the GT300 class, this car will compete against everything from Porsche 911s to Toyota Corollas. Really.
Note: most of the high-definition video is in Japanese, but at around the 3-minute mark, there's some in-car action.

Finally, some old school Mercedes-Benz tuning!
Banovsky on August 28, 2009
I just love this car. What's the point of throwing 24-inch rims on a brand-new S-Class when everyone on your block is doing the same thing? So much of the appeal in modifying a vehicle is doing something unique, and this 1983 Mercedes-Benz 560SE by Inden Design is exactly what I'm talking about.
Ok, so this isn't a recently tuned vehicle. Back in 1991, Inden Design tuned this, their first project car. With a new (1986) front clip with the rest of the car from 1983, even in '91 it wasn't a new car!
The mods list is simple, subtle, and timeless. Blacked-out everything, lowered suspension, widened fenders, 18-inch wheels, steamroller rear tires, warmed-over 6.0-litre V8 with 368 horsepower, and AP Racing brakes.
Inside, it's all class: a black leather interior, different wood trim, and sport seats.
Since Inden design decided to photograph one of their earliest models, we've decided to put up a small collection of photos, after the jump.

vLane compares: Kia Soul, Honda Civic, Nissan cube
Banovsky on August 24, 2009
On the surface, these three models don't have much in common. Sure, the Soul and the cube look like competitors, but the Soul is much more conventional under the skin — and in design, it must be said — than the totally out-there Japanese-built cube. But if it's a conventional car you're after, the Honda Civic will likely fit the bill nicely…and put you to sleep.
The cars
The Soul: "Gimmicks aside, this $13,300 hatchback might just be the coolest thing to come out of Korea since the barbecue." (review)
The Civic: "I wish the Civic traded a slice of performance for a bit more refinement. I’m also annoyed that for all its swoopy good looks and futuristic interior, the Civic remains a pretty conventional car." (review)
The cube: "The cube’s engine makes it move, and that’s fine. It’s not the point — this square is more than the sum of its parts." (review)
