Gen X'ers Unite: the Cars of our Childhoods were Awesome

Before airbags and seat belts, there were some good TV and movie cars.

I'm a child of the 70s and 80s, which means that I watched a boatload of television and movies, many of which featured the kinds of cars that were much cooler than anything my parents or relatives parked in the driveway:
  • The A-Team Van

Face may have had his red racing-stripe corvette, but the A-Team would not have survived its many shoot-outs with bad guys, were it not for the super-steady and bulletproof A-Team Van, a 1983 GMC G-15.

  • Christine

This unforgettable Stephen King story about a creepy 1958 Plymouth Fury jealously possessing its driver showed a transformation from a high school super-geek into a power-hungry popular guy. Then the car killed anyone who threatened to steal its new owner's attention away, like the love interest—good stuff! It also gave me nightmares and made me scared of classic cars until my teens. Thanks Stephen King!

  • The General Lee

Even if you weren't a southerner, you can appreciate the pimped out ride of these two good ol' boys who are never meanin' no harm. Sure, it made no sense that the doors didn't work, but it sure was cool to watch them slide in and school those white, boxy police cars that could never keep up.

  • Herbie the Love Bug

This 1962 VW Beetle was the inspiration for my own New Beetle that I drove for a few years. Who doesn't like a responsible car with a sense of humor? Certainly not these folks.

  • KITT

Forget that dumb remake Knight Rider movie from last year and the new TV series—nothing beats the Hoff in his prime and the talking car from Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT) who saved his butt each week.
