What's your favorite driving road in America?

In a recent Top Gear episode devoted to finding the world's greatest driving road (as defined by twisty turns, great scenery, and no traffic), host Jeremy Clarkson dismissed America as the last place to look. No analysis, no commentary. Just a quick assertion that we're not worth the trouble.Think he's full of it? We might have lower speed limits and more congestion, but surely this great nation of ours has some roads that measure up to the world's finest. Heck, even staying in a 50-mile radius of L.A. uncovers favorites like the Angeles Crest Highway, The O.C.'s Ortega Highway (74), and the wealth of serpentine roads surrounding Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear (138, 18, 38).
Personally, I nominate California's route 58 -- an 85-mile trek connecting two Middles of Nowhere (Santa Margarita and Buttonwillow) -- as best in the west. This one's got it all: a wealth of challenging turns, elevation changes, very few blind corners, and the sight of one car every half hour -- on a busy day.
Ever found one better? Tell us about the greatest American road you've ever experienced.

Commented on May 21, 2008I used love riding Skyline Blvd back in the late 80s but then it got too crowded for me.. Highway 9 over to Santa Cruz is another great motorcycle ride, but the traffic there is also a concern... Highway 1 down to Big Sur is still a favorite.

Commented on May 22, 2008California Hwy 25 between Hollister and 128 near King City is mostly unpatrolled, and has a great mix of twisties and a 4 mile straight where you can test your top end. It's not unreasonably far from the Bay Area, and almost untraveled.
