The secret world of cars and tents

It started with the photo you see below. A Sunday morning browse of Chrysler's press photo archive turned up a photo of the "Magic Camper" package, available on the 1985 Plymouth Voyager. "Hmm…" I wondered, "How many car companies offer tents for their vehicles?" The results may surprise you.

1985 Plymouth Voyager "Magic Camper" package

If I'm honest, I gave up searching for OEM tent packages. There are simply too many. From laughing at the Chervrolet Nova 6 "Hutch" package (that turns an open hatchback into a three-sided cheese slice tent), to marvelling at the ingenuity of the Honda Element's available "curtains" — it seems outdoorsy people work at nearly every car company.

So without further adieu, click through for a gallery of my favourites.

Saab "Toppola"

saab toppola

Available on the 900, 9000, and 9-3 models, the Saab Toppola was an OEM option, designed and tested to augment the graceful lines (*cough*) of Saab styling. A couple even used their Toppola-equipped Saab to travel around the world! Sadly, most of the other options here aren't half as cool or innovative…I'd love to see an Aston Martin DB9 Toppola camper, for instance…

Chevy Silverado and Avalanche "sport tent"

Not very exciting…it's a tent that fits inside your truck bed. Perfect for those who travel light, 'cause where do you put all the crap that was in the bed? The photo of the "actual" tent is boring, so here's a bonus photo of the Chevrolet Silverado Base Camp Concept.

Honda Element

honda element curtains

These accessory curtains, for $168, are an elegant solution. Simply pull up to the camp site, affix the curtains, fold your seats flat, and fall asleep. Just remember to turn off your portable TV from 1994. Or is that a Neo Geo?

Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager/Chrysler Town & Country

plymouth magic camper

Mmmhmm…this is what started it all. A cheesy four person tent that latches onto the side of a minivan. The only problem I see here: is the van side of the tent open? What if you want to drive into town? Actually, it looks like there's some excess material slung over top of that cherry Voyager…Those were the days!

Dodge Caravan Camper

dodge camper

Wikipedia calls this the "Dodge Caravan Camper" — but is it an aftermarket conversion or something you could order from a dealership? If it's aftermarket, it doesn't belong here. If it is a factory option well, then…I want one.

Toyota Chinook

toyota chinook

From what I can gather, the Chinook was offered as a joint package between Chinook motorhomes and Toyota in 1974. Other RV companies soon jumped on the Toyota platform, but since the Toyota/Chinook collaboration was a joint one, it belongs here. Man, how sweet would this be parked next to your Toyota Celica Sunchaser? [Photo found here.]

Nissan Titan, Frontier, Rogue, XTerra, Pathfinder, Murano, Armada

Yup, Nissan offers either a bed tent or hatch tent for these models. Get camping!

Ford Expedition, Explorer, Ranger, F-150

Ford also offers bed or hatch tents. Like Nissan, I don't think they were developed by the carmaker — but since they're being offered as an accessory, they count. Sorry for the crappy photo, Ford's was too small…

Volkswagen Touareg, Tiguan, Routan, Golf, GTI, Rabbit, Passat Wagon and Jetta Wagon

Most Volkswagens come with hatches, so why not offer tents? V-Dub teamed up with a "tent manufacturer" to offer a bunch through their accessories site.

Pontiac Aztek

This is probably the best-integrated and best-known OEM-offered tent package. "My, how big your tent is…" "All the better to sleep you, my dear." Wait, that sounded wrong…

Land Rover LR2, LR3, LR4, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover

land rover tailgate tent

Ahoy, rich'uns! Your wine-and-cheese tasting tent has arrived! For the low, low price of…well…the accessories book doesn't say. But it sure looks swank, right?

Chevy Nova Hatchback Hutch

Haha, just look at the lame-ness! It was also offered for the 'teh suck' 1973 Pontiac Ventura GTO…

Chevrolet Blazer Chalet and GMC Jimmy Casa Grande

These are the ultimate, go-anywhere OEM-offered campers. Just ask the gurus of blazerchalet.com, the online home of these bad-ass excursion vehicles. Need I mention "Jimmy Casa Grande" is probably the best name for a vehicle, ever? (Either that, or a value menu item…) Oh, and who made the truck bed camper shell? Why, none other than Chinook, the same folks that did the Toyota "Chinook." Thanks to Old Car Brochures for uploading these awesome brochure scans!

Obviously, I left out the Volkswagen Camper (IE Westfalia)…and I'm sure I forgot other manufacturer-endorsed tent and camper options. Please leave a comment below, and I'll add in the missing vehicles, giving you credit for your help. Oh, and if this sort of stuff interests you, check out Expedition Portal.

I'm pretty sure that Caravan Camper is not a Dodge offering. It actually doesn't even look like a package deal, but it probably was. Take a cargo Caravan, add a bubble top and some aftermarket windows, throw in some cheap velour seats and shag carpet - tada! Those full size conversion vans were big in the 80's and a bunch of companies made minivan conversions too.

Back in the 70's, my family had a camper conversion of a '74 dodge Maxi-Van by a company called TEC. It had a pop up top like the Toyota and the Blazer and a full camper interior. Mom and Dad slept in the fold down dinette, my sister and I slept in the hammock like canvas bed that attached in the pop up top.

There's a brochure on eBay here for a '77. Our van was like the lower left pic on page one, with a floor plan like the one on the left on page two.

The Pontiac Aztek actually looks better with the tent package on.

@Fred, unfortunately, BMW never put the Air Camper into production…
