Here’s the thing about the Camaro: it’s not a car, it’s marketing.
Do you really think Chevrolet, out of the goodness of their hearts, redefined what it means to produce a modern muscle car? Hell no. The Camaro is on the road to market the company.
They just let you drive it around for them.
Before you think I’m completely crazy, let me break your heart: the Camaro doesn’t drive all that well. It’s not a sports car — far from it — and though the 304 horsepower 3.6-litre direct injection V6 RS I drove had the numbers to make an impression, it just didn’t.
Starting from the engine bay and working your way through the car, it’s like Chevrolet put things in this coupe just so you can tell your friends: "Yeah, it has that," but not so the "things" make a better car. Let me explain.
The performance
Yes, you can tell your friends that your new Camaro RS has 300 horsepower. And rear-drive. And it’ll burn rubber like an orgy. But it weighs nearly 3800 lbs, which is as much at two Smart fortwos — or — one trip to Wal-Mart shy of a Toyota 4Runner 4WD SUV. It’s also 300lbs. more than a V8-powered 2002 Camaro Z28 coupe. Weight dilutes performance, so your 300 ponies end up feeling more like 260. (At 6.1 seconds to 60 mph, it’s only two ticks faster than a V6-powered Toyota RAV4 super-cute-ute-mom-wagon…)
That weight isn’t just “safety and emissions equipment” as manufacturers are so quick to say. Actually, despite the weight, it'll do a best-in-class 17 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
Some of the weight, I guess, is from the 20-inch wheels fitted to my RS tester.
They look great — “Hey, friends, look: I have 20s on my car!” — but dilute the steering feel, make the car feel heavier than it should (rotating mass is worth about four times its weight when moving, so, say, 50lbs of wheel and tire at each corner feel more like 200lbs.) And though there’s tremendous grip from the ultra-wide tires, there’s very little confidence from the driver’s seat.
That is, if you’re going to drive it like it’s a sports car. Sorry, I forgot: it’s a marketing tool. Let’s continue.
The looks
Something else you can tell your friends: the car looks amazing, from it’s chiselled flanks, to BMW-esque ‘halo’ headlights, to scouring lower grille. It’s every bit the Whitesnake Bon Jovi Reunion Tour Superfest Road Wagon you’d hope it to be. But those looks come at a price.
First, every boy under the age of 15 (and some as old as 45) will point and shout, “Bumblebee!” as you drive past, which is only a good thing if you sell Megan Fox bikini calendars, or if you are the leader of the Boy Scouts.
Second, those looks directly impact on the amount of interior space. The top of my head rubbed on the sunroof cover, and I’m only 6’1”. True, I refuse to adopt a ‘gangsta lean’ in a car, but there’s simply not enough head room. What about storage space? Not much. Even less if you opt for the auxiliary gauge package that resides in the lower dash panel, just in front of the shift lever.
“Look, friends: I have auxiliary gauges!”
And trunk space? Those sexy, sculpted, naughtier-than-Sasha Grey rear fenders come at a price: there isn’t much trunk space. The opening is too small, the trunk itself is too shallow, and — though the rear seats fold down — the pass-through isn’t American Tourister (let alone Parisian Tourister) worthy.
The verdict
So where are we? You can tell your friends you have a sexy car, it has lots of power, it has big rims, auxiliary gauges, and that by buying one you’ve helped the apparently soon-to-recover American economy.
Tell them you’ve bought a Camaro because you believe in freedom.
Back to my original point. Every time you drive a new Camaro, it makes General Motors look good. How could it not? From the outside, it looks like the company finally has their act together. The Camaro just does that to people. It makes them want to test drive a Chevrolet again. It makes them tell you (endless) stories about how the family has always bought GM, how they are pleased-as-peach the company is out of bankruptcy, and how it’ll be nice to see those “got-damm” imports out of the country.
Can the Camaro do all that? Consider it has 20,000 pre-orders and outsold the venerable (and much better, in my opinion) Ford Mustang last month.
Consider that the car even starts at a low, low, price of $22,000. It’s practically subsidized by the future of America. Your children’s future.
The verdict: If you want an inexpensive, fun-to-drive, rear-drive performance car, buy a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, or a Mazda MX-5 Miata (and a few pink shirts.)
But if you want to live again after spending 15 years driving drab, beige, Japanese-produced prison cells with funny names like Camry, Corolla, or Altima, buy the Camaro. Tell your friends about the engine, the wheels, and the gauges. Tell them it starred in two real-life moving pictures made in Hollywood!
Tell them General Motors is back, in a big way, because they are. But the General’s best products are G8, CTS, Malibu, Equinox, and Traverse.
The Camaro is the sales pitch.

Commented on July 24, 2009I don't disagree, and Im' a long time Camaro fan.
The Camaro has long had the chops, on paper, to beat the Mustang. For a lot of years, it was the better performance car as well, and one could argue this one does too.
But, it also for years made compromises for styling that made it hard to live with, particularly with the Gen. 4.
Sounds like with Gen 5, GM has done it again. I wonder, once the newness wears off, the Transformers glow fades and the Camaro has to face the Mustang on even footing, if it'll turn into a sales dud.

Commented on July 27, 2009Yes, I for one am going to cancel my order now, due to the lack of trunk space and the fact that it weighs too much! Ha Ha Ha! Make up your mind, is it a sports car you want it to be, or an overly practical family truckster? You argue that it doesn't drive like a sports car, yet you want dead-body capacity in the trunk?

Commented on July 27, 2009This is not about a sales pitch for many owners/future buyers. It is about heritage, bringing back the past with the present technologies. GM, might have showed up to the game late, but they just pinched hit and whacked one. Seriously. Your review is on the v6, no offence (to the 6), but it is the the v6. Try the ls3, and your ingenius, ignorant review and perception will change. What is the mustang gt rated at for performance? How much is it? Exactly. You could probable compare the v6 and the gt togother, on any day, stock for stock, the gt will win, but we are talking over 10 dollars difference for probable 2-3 tenths difference. Get a grip and stay in your Ford.

Commented on July 27, 2009This article is far from a rational review but instead is an inflammatory attack on a vehicle the author very obviously had a poor opinion of before even driving it - a true piece of irresponsible journalistic bovine excrement. The Camaro is not a foreign box of aluminum foil designed to transport sweaty soccer teams or pretentious treehuggers. It's a muscle car - which you, Mr. Banovsky, obviously have some sort of problem with. Sorry, but the Camaro is definitely a vehicle an awful lot of Americans want to own, drive, and enjoy. Whether you want to or not is your own decision, of course. But from the sounds of it you're used to driving what we Camaro owners endearingly call a POS, and maybe you better stick with that. You're obviously not the kind of person we'd want to see in a Camaro anyway because you just don't understand the car. Nope - you just don't get it.

Commented on July 27, 2009They pay people to write this type of rhetoric ? Did it occur to the writer what kind of car he was revieiwng ? This is not meant to be a replacement for your 4 door Accord, nor your Sequoia or Pathfinder. Perhaps staying in the review section of latest recipes and ladies footwear is where your talents lie, it would appear cars are not within the arena of your 'journalistic skills'. I'll give credit for one idea, choosing the V6 was a wise move. Although orders are high, I don't believe many are opting for the pricetag of the SS when they can competitively get into the V6 and get the benefit of the car vs. competitors. If the writer actually made a comparable review to the direct competitors for this car, perhaps he'd understand the trunk space, vehicle weight and other factors this 'Pony Car' is meant to compete with in the marketplace. Why drag GM through mud for trying to produce an icon car. Yes sir, believe it, this car is an icon. If you don't understand that, you must be less than 25 years old. This car directly appeals to the baby boomers (perhaps you need to look that up and understand why that market would be targeted) as well as 'reels in' the current generation. Great job GM. You took a while, but you did IN FACT produce what America wants ... maybe just not what Canada wants ... even though it is produced there. By the way, 'the second coming of the Confederacy' ??? That, I suppose, is what you'd call 'creative' or 'imaginative' writing. Have you considered a college degree for a higher level of writing skills ?

Commented on July 27, 2009Any child can write a review and pretend they know what they are talking about. How can someone say the trunk is small (the opening is small but space is enormous and the rear seat fold for more) then recommend the Miata with no power, tiny trunk, and less headspace. Speaking of headspace, I'm 6'4" and don't hit the sunroof cover. Did you sit on a telephone book to see over the steering wheel? Handling is like being stuck to fly paper and tires weigh the same between the Mustang (your love)and Camaro (as a scientist your lame pseudo scientific equation makes no sense). With larger rims there is less rubber but the overall height is the same. Maybe someday when this kid grows up he'll understand how to properly be objective

Commented on July 27, 2009Hi Michael,
I tried to see what kind of experience you had as a car reviewer but I have only found that you have a talent in photography. Perhaps you can let us readers know a little about your background.
Myself, I've been a Camaro enthusiast for over 25 years. I am also the owner of the new 2010 Camaro and I must say that I was taken back by your comments. For starters, I am also 6'1'' and have quite a bit a headroom due to simply lowering the actual seat itself (not the backrest). Did you do that?
Being the owner of this car, I can also state that it attracts more than just children and guys who dream of a date with Megan Fox. In fact, I have had more positive compliments and interest from those who have a few grey hairs popping up then any other demographic. This car transcends all age groups which is extremely rare in this day and age. That alone tells me that Chevrolet hit the nail on the head design wise. I challenge you to name one vehicle that can do this in it's market segment (Mustang included).
You did not state your reasons for choosing a Mustang over a Camaro. I think your readers would like to know why. Is it the fact that the Camaro has an independant rear suspension vs. the Mustangs live axle? Is it the fact that the 2010 Mustang is still built on the same platform as the 1978 Mustang. Perhaps you are not happy with the fact that the Camaro is built at the Oshawa plant, one of the most technologically advanced and highly productive car plants in the world.
However you decide to evaluate a vehicle (whatever vehicle) in the future, please take the time to talk to current owners of the car - people who spent time in it everyday. They will be the folks who will speak the truth. Should you find a plethora of unsatisfied owners, pehaps your review will have merit. As far as this new Camaro is concerned, you're going to have a hard time finding them.
Regards, Hylton Jorssen

Commented on July 27, 2009Your "review" was about as intelligent as a screen door on a submarine and just as useless. You're obviously one of those way-left-of-center snob-wannabes who think they appear "elite" by slamming everything with snarky, working-too-hard-to-appear-clever comments.
You don't know the difference between a muscle car and a Miata; you complain about the trunk space of the Camaro and then recommend...a MIATA. You test drive the lowest powered entry level version and then complain about the power as though that's all GM offers; try the SS model before you complain about power in a Camaro. You are so inexperienced at driving you don't know how to adjust the seat down so your ego-swollen head doesn't touch the roof. You "begrudgingly" acknowledge the looks of the Camaro and the amazing 29mpg the V6 model gets, yet trash the Camaro for just being advertising without substance. Actually it seems obvious that it's you who are without substance; since you think the universe revolves around you and what you think you can't comprehend that anything else can be any different from you, so you judge the Camaro to be like you... fortunately it's the exact opposite which is why they are selling like hotcakes. If they were as bad as you claim, word-of-mouth would have already killed it; just like your credibility as a journalist and reviewer.

Commented on July 27, 2009Out and about the other day in my V6 and a couple of guys in a riced-out civic flagged me down and asked to look at my car. One of em said a female friend of his had ordered an SS and he challenged her to a race. She agreed and they laid $500 on it. The guys popped my hood and looked in at my lil' old V6. One guy looks at the other and says "Dude, I should just give her my money now." True story. I'l trade that for trunk space any day. Oh, and btw... I like my V6. I don't need to get anywhere faster than it will take me, which is pretty snappy. Besides, I like cruising slow so everyone can get a nice long look at my bangin' ride and watch 'em drool in the rearview when I pass by.

I remember people complaining about how the internet was going to ruin society. I love the internet. Back in the old days these people had power since it was only their view that was heard. Now we get to hear all sides & the internet does not have any sympathy when it comes to flaming. One of my favorite cars I have owned was a 1978 Camaro. I did not drive for the trunk space. Keep it up GM, you know your doing something right when you are being criticised.

Commented on July 27, 2009What I sincerely believe is that there are Chevy Guys, there are Ford Guys, Dodge Guys, and then there are people who write about things and put those opinions aside and write a real review.
Did you ever have dreams when you were a kid? Did you dream about the fuel economy, and power to weight ratio, and usefulness of the trunk? Did you try to decipher what would be better for your daily drive or how many people you can fit in the back seat?
If you did then I'm sorry for you... I'm also sorry that you must sit so upright in a sports car that your head rubs against the headliner; maybe you’re just not cool enough for the “gangster” lean. It could also be possible that have the torso to leg ratio of Michael Phelps, maybe you are Michael Phelps who also happens to be a fish. But I digress.
What ISN'T marketing in this world? Marketing is the reason there are the people I just mentioned above. Marketing is the reason why anything gets inflated and unbelievably over-priced. It’s the same reason why people would rather buy Nikes over Adidas and Prada over some other overpriced useless sunglasses. If everything was about function then everything would be sold in white cardboard boxes with no labels and just SKU #’s. Without marketing there would be no “Tide with Bleach” there would just be detergent and there would just be bleach. AND you would never hear anyone say, “Let’s make a ‘Xerox’ copy.” They would just say, “Let’s make a copy.” Again, I digress.
If the Camaro is not an iconic American Muscle Car then what is?
Ford originally produced the Mustang as an everyday driver affordable get around car - their original intentions were not to make it a Muscle Car but then it eventually became one, because it was eventually marketed as one.
You have to understand that a muscle car isn’t about the name or the MPG or the size of the trunk. Any kid, as well as any un-opinionated reviewer, as well as any bum on the street can look at the Camaro and say, ”There goes a REAL MUSCLE CAR.” Maybe it’s the long flowing hood, the rumble at the acceleration, the chiseled outlines or maybe there’s something magical that we call “Muscle Car-ness” just like there is a “Monster Truck-ness” or “Soccer Mom Mobile-ness”.
That is something that you don’t understand when you review a Chevy Camaro and you mention cars like the Hyundai Genesis and the Mazda Miata, whether you’re wearing a pink shirt or not…

Commented on July 27, 2009I think the review is pretty much spot on. The main complaint is just that the the car is overweight, especially in the LT trim. 3800 lbs with 300 horsepower is just under 13lbs per horsepower. Perhaps slightly above average for a sedan, but for a sports car, that's not exactly impressive.
You guys that are claiming he should only review the SS model are also way out of line. Bottom line: Chevrolet makes a 'base' LT model, and that a review of this entry level model is legitimate. The base models usually outsell the up-market trim, so if anything the reviews should generally be about the proletarian model.
Plus, A bunch of you guys are giving him crap about headroom--which he doesn't even mention. I think the writer's main statement is people are buying this car for asthetics alone--even if by all other standards it just isn't an outstanding car. Average at best.

I'm 6'2" and my friend is 6'4", both of us fit in the car without a "gangsta lean" and without brushing our heads on the sunroof cover. That little nob on the left side of your seat goes up and down by the way, you should check it out.
Find me a car that competes with the V6 Camaro for anywhere near the same price, then come back and talk. Since you brought them up, the Miata MX5 has much lower performance, smaller space, and costs as much. The Genesis has to have the track pack to compete, and that makes the car about $7k more. Game over numb nuts.
"The new Mercedes sedan: Sure, it looks good and handles well, but can only tow 500lbs and can't off-road worth a damn. Better luck next time, Mercedes." I love it.

Commented on July 27, 2009WOW...Just...WOW! Is there something that GM has done to you personally to warrant you spewing this dribble and calling it a 'review'? Yeah, I'm none too happy about the whole government bail out, but that is besides the point... Head room? I'm 6'3" and I have NO issues with head room, but, then again, I took the time to actually adjust the seat. And, no, I don't "gangsta lean". As for it being a marketing tool, you are missing one little fact here ace: GM unveiled the Camaro Concept at the Detroit International AutoShow in January of 2006 and announced it's return to production during the Summer that year. I was on the GM Tech Center grounds when it was done...almost a full year before the release of Transformers. When I saw her for the first time at the Auto Show I told the people I was with flat out that if GM built it, I would buy one. Last week I took ownership of my 2010 Camaro SS after 3 years and 6 months...a full 9 months AFTER putting my deposit down. For me, it has NOTHING to do with Marketing, or Transformers, or any of that trash. It's a beautiful car and the performance is well worth the wait. I didn't buy it for trunk/storage space. I didn't buy it for gas mileage or because of a mid-life crisis. I bought it because of the I thought then and I still think today that GM did everything right with it. Oh, and before I get labeled a 'Fan Boy' I might as well tell you all that not only is this the first GM car that I have own, it is the first CAR that I have own. I've been a Ford truck man my whole life.

I'm going to wager that 99% of the commenters have not driven this car, and thus have not tasted the utter dissapointment I felt after getting out of it. Then again, maybe you shouldn't meet your heroes.
If you guys really read between the lines of, say, Jalopnik's comparo of the Mustang GT, Challenger R/T and Camaro SS, you'll see that they echo similar sentiments in a much more veiled way.

I'm sure you'll like my comment on your blog as well, considering the only thing better about it than this one was that it was shorter and thus easier to get through the whole thing without completely laughing my a$$ off. I am not one of the 99% of people who has not driven a Camaro, I actually happen to own one. No I don't have a mullet, or a confederate flag tattoo or sticker. I'm from southern california. I'm wealthy from my own hands, I own 3 businesses. I have driven just about every single car on the road today, and many that you'll never see in your lifetime. There is nothing disappointing about the new 2010 Camaro, in any trim level. You're just another one of those people who is caught up in what the media thinks is a good car. Get some ideas of your own instead of copying what you hear on the nightly news. Enjoy your lonely life spent on this website writing bad reviews of a car you should have never been allowed to set foot in from the beginning. You can't handle it.

Commented on July 28, 2009I have been driving a Camaro 1SS for about a month now.. I have to tell this reviewer that he is full of crap.. If you are going to do a proper review, at the very least run the numbers of how fast the SS is in comparison to the Mustang GT and since you drove the V6 Camaro, how fast it is against the regular Mustang and then compare the V6 Camaro to any 2003 and below Mustang GT which the Camaro V6 actually beats in HP and speed... You can say the 2010 Camaro SS can beat the 2006 Corvette Z06 at the track... Ultimately you know nothing about performance cars and even less about writing a review that is fair and has meaning. Thanks for wasting the 30 seconds it took me to read your review...

Commented on July 28, 2009Hey, Derek Kreindler, Jalopnik's reviews are usually as sarcastic, factless and worthless as this one, and your comments. Way to look like a winner! Thumbs up to you!
Idiot.

Commented on July 28, 2009Smart cars have a 0-60 time of the V6 Camaro's 1/4 mile, why even compare the weight? You are clearly a ricer or Mustang fag.

Commented on August 1, 2009I haven't seen such hate since I read a Honda forum four years ago, and someone dared to suggest that hp per liter was a useless metric for measuring performance. AreYouSerious, you sir are a without a doubt a peasant with negligible reading comprehension skills . I know many wealthy self-made men who are fans of American Iron; they do not troll internet comment boards and they don't let a 20 year old college student's opinion of their car get under their skin.

Commented on August 19, 2009What's up guys? I will write why I like 2010 Chevrolet Camaro RS concept. First - if you borrow a car like this - I think your money will be well spend, because it is a performance car, with a spectacular design. read more about that on topspeed.com, also see more pictures there.

Commented on August 19, 2009Derek, do you even know what you just wrote? Who's the troll letting other people's opinions get under their skin huh? Sounds to me like you may have !@ in your diaper. Grow up and come talk to me when you've actually experienced the world a little bit. Hahahahaha, negligible reading comprehension skills, that's funny.

Commented on August 19, 2009My bad, my negiligible reading comprehension skills prevented me from noticing something you said. It was not your opinion that got under my skin, it is your attitude that is conveyed through your writing. When one states an opinion, one must understand that it is not fact. However when you write you speak as if your opinion is law. That is what bothers me about you, not your misguided opinions.

Commented on October 20, 2009As soon you read "the Camaro like it’s the second coming of Confederacy or something" this should of been your firdt clue this was a in bread bigot idiot. I personaly do not own a New Camaro, I find it a attractive car, with a great engine, but way to tight on headroom and back seat room, Also I wont support the dealers ripping people off with 5000-10000 dealer mark up's, dont be a sucker, when you are a stock holder in G.M. Also this halfwit dude Michael Banovsky gets his jollies posting crap, so he can beat his meat while reading your posts.
