In this five-part series, we'll take a look at some of the most exciting products that GM has in the pipeline. It's not a commercial, either: with 60.8 per cent of the company now owned by the US taxpayers — and 11.7 per cent by Canadian taxpayers — it's a good time to look at how well our investments are holding up.

The new LaCrosse is leagues ahead of the current model.

The 2010 Buick LaCrosse uses the same platform as the Opel Insignia from the European Division of GM, a popular vehicle in Europe that was given the honour of European Car of the Year, 2009, and Top Gear's Executive Car of the Year, 2008. Wise decision, I think, to share the award-winning platform with its American cousin.

The new LaCrosse has really impressed me especially in terms of design. When did Buicks start looking like this? I can see a lot of similarities beyond just the platform with these two cars. In terms of appearance, the curves and lines of each vehicle resemble one another especially when viewing both cars from the front. The position of the grills and slope of the hoods are almost identical, except that the LaCrosse looks a bit larger at the front and I think that might be because of the way the headlights slant upwards at the corners. To me, it also makes the LaCrosse look wider.

The Insignia really is a stylish vehicle with a lot of features within the interior. The multi-function infotainment controller is a smart idea that gives occupants an easier way to control the navigation system, phone and audio system all in one button. I had no idea that you could drive a car and adjust it depending on your mood. Opel has managed to do just that with the Insignia a feature that would work well on the new LaCrosse, I think. It's named the FlexRide switch and drivers can select between sport, tour and standard mode. Sport mode always you to experience speed sensitive steering, quicker shifting and the vehicle is more responsive. In the Tour mode it's all about a relaxing drive and under standard mode this allows for better fuel economy.

One feature that I really like are the headlights that change position during night driving to provide better vision. The headlights can move 15 degrees to even provide you with a better view around corners. Luckily for potential LaCrosse buyers and Insignia buyers, this feature is available in both vehicles. The 2.0 Ecotec 4 cylinder engine is going to be an interesting prospect. I'm quite impressed with the design too, very Lexus-like without being too derivative.
