Top 5 Ways to Conserve Gas

From LaurenG, Featured Contributor

With gas prices still at an all time high, many people are going to extremes in order to conserve gas.

If biking, walking, running or taking public transportation to work or play is not an option for you, take note of some of our helpful techniques that can help you keep that tanked of yours filled just a little bit longer!

  • 1Don't punch the gas when the light turns green!

Face it, you're not Dale Earnhardt and you probably never will be! Not only is it dangerous to punch the gas when the light turns green, it also wastes an absurd amount of gas. When the light turns green, make sure nobody runs a red light then slowly push on the pedal. You'll find yourself making fewer trips to fill up the pump!

  • 2Drive slower!

Is the speed limit 65 miles per hour? Great! Reduce your speed to 55 mph, and enjoy the benefits of consuming 20%-30% less gas than if you were to drive the actual speed limit. Sure people may ride your tail or pass you by, but if you're in no real hurry, what's the point of driving so fast and wasting precious gas?

  • 3Pump up your tires!

Nobody likes flat tires! Not only is it really dangerous to drive around on under-inflated tires, it's also wasteful. You can save up to eight cents a gallon on gas with properly inflated tires. Listen to Barack Obama and inflate them properly.

  • 4Keep your car properly maintained!

Just because you hate going to the doctor doesn't mean that you can let your car miss its regular check-up. Keeping your vehicle's parts up to par could help you consume 10% less gas than normal. Now that's a check-up worth going to. No shots required!

  • 5Get a GPS device!

It sure sucks driving around in circles looking for that certain restaurant or for your date's apartment. Not only are you wasting time, you're also wasting valuable gas. Invest in a GPS device. This will allow you to arrive to your destination on time without getting out of the car to ask for directions (hopefully, at least).

  • While there are many other alternatives ways to help you save gas, these seem to be the most reasonable. It's easy to drive a little slower, maintain your car, and install a GPS device. In order to save gas, you don't have change your days, you just have to change your ways!

I think it is a good idea to get in a calm state of mind before getting behind the wheel. If you are not anxious while driving, you won't feel the need make every second on the road seem so precious and you will avoid the constant speed changes. This will help you drive slower, and more safely too.

Plan ahead and combine your trips. Don't drive in stop and go traffic. Avoid rush hours where possible.
