Burning Man is Known for Many Things: Community, Self Expression and Killer Art Cars

Cars aren't allowed on the Playa at Burning Man, unless they are Art Cars. Over the years, this has led to some pretty cool creations. The theme of Burning Man 2008 is 'American Dream' which should lead to some pretty cool cars.

There are lots of rules surrounding art cars at Burning Man, including that they Art must be registered with the Department of Mutant Vehicles (DMV). Art cars can drive, but the speed cannot exceed 5 miles per hour, and they must give the right away to pedestrians at all times. Drivers cannot be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Given that drugs and alcohol seem like a requirement to survive 5 days of sitting in the desert dust with 50,000 other people, I'd guess they don't get driven much.

Whatever your impression of Burning Man, there's no doubt that the event leads to some great group creativity. Here are some pictures of transportation from years past. Hey, no one said that you couldn't be under the influence while assembling your car!
