August 19th is a very historic day for race car drivers and enthusiasts, alike.

Today marks the day that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway held the first organized automobile race. On this day in 1909, the speedway was opened for three consecutive days of racing. The first race consisted of a 2-lap, 5-mile race, which was won by automotive engineer Louis Schwitzer. "Louie", as they called him, managed to drive his four cylinder stripped down Stoddard Dayton touring car all the way to the finish-line averaging a whopping 54.7 miles per hour. All I can say is, good thing Danica Patrick or Marco Andretti weren't around back then...
