Animal Friendly Road Construction
From georgiana, Featured Contributor
Posted on October 3, 2008
Many years ago I was hiking through a gorgeous landscape when my companion startled me by saying, "This place is so beautiful. I'd love to build a road through it." This was a new perspective for me, who had always been grateful there were no roads spoiling the place. I’ve also always worried for the wildlife displaced by the road. I would feel pretty awful if a species built a major thoroughfare right through my living room, forcing me to cross it whenever I wanted to get to my kitchen.

October 2008 Car/Truck Models With 0% Finance Charges
From LesleyB on October 2, 2008
Is there such a thing as 'free money'? No, but sometimes there are 0% APRs.
The month of September was an ugly one across the board for car manufacturers doing business in the U.S. In response, they are dropping financing rates, which can make a huge difference on the amount you pay for your car, assuming you will be getting a loan. Here is a list of the 2008 and 2009 models that have had financing rates lowered all the way to 0%, for a period of time ranging from 36 months to 72 months. Note that not all manufacturers have updated their information for October. We will update this information as those are added.

Top 10 Most Frequently Towed Cars
From K Olsen on October 2, 2008
Here are the cars I see most frequently on the business end of my tow truck
The number one reason I end up towing a vehicle is because of an accident. I do tend to see either SUVs and sport cars in this category, because people think they can out drive everyone else or handle anything. So, they skid off the road or get hit from behind due to bad driving decisions. The second most common reason I tow vehicles is because people ignore recalls. If there is a recall on your car or truck, it means there is something wrong, and you need to get it fixed.

Bumper Stickers - What They Say About Us
From LaurenG on September 26, 2008
If you have more than two does that make you a little crazy?
It's always entertaining to have people on the road who have taken the trouble to stick bumper stickers on their vehicles to inform the public of their smart dog, their baby on board, their growing family, or of course, their honor student. Due to technology advances in bumper stickers, getting one isn't quite the commitment it used to be, when whatever eighty cent slogan you slapped on there would outlive your car. Now, with the easily removable window stickers, people can put anything they want on their car without having to think through the ramifications of still having it on in several years.
Still, bumper stickers can tell you a lot about a person. Here are some of my favorites. Which are yours?

From LaurenG on September 26, 2008
Which of your favorite cars do you wish would "Go Green" already?
While a good amount of cars have already been converted, or announced plans to convert into hybrid or electric models, there are still many popular cars that have yet to announce a greener route. It's difficult to create a more fuel efficient forms of vehicles without altering body styles, which presents a challenge for the makers of popular designs. If you could have it all (meaning hybrid with no body style alteratIon) which car would you most like to see next as a hybrid?

Handicapped Parking
From georgiana on September 26, 2008
In defense of those spots you desperately wish you could park in

Handicapped parking is a volatile subject. Plenty of people have the "must be nice syndrome," i.e. it must be nice to be able to never have to worry about parking or it must be nice to not have to walk very far when you go out. Real But is it nice? Probably not, given that in almost all cases it comes along with a life-impacting physical handicap.

WTF Classifieds - Cars From the First Great Depression
From LesleyB on September 25, 2008
No, not model year 2009. We're talking about the originals.
It's been a crazy couple weeks. Bankruptcies, bailouts, widespread ranting about personal and corporate responsibility. While nobody really knows what the fallout of adding $700 Billion of debt relief into the economy will be, many are saying it's the start of a major correction in the stock market similar to the Great Depression of the 1930's. What does that mean for the world of cars? If the 1930's were any indication, we're in for shorter, fatter cars without a lot of ornamentation, and smaller windows and headlights. Check out the evolution of cars through the 1930's. Oh yeah, and if you want the real deal, rather than waiting for future models, each of these is for sale on eBay.

Gas Saving Devices That Don't Save Gas
From georgiana on September 23, 2008
Don't Get Ripped off
The price of gas in my neighborhood jumped by 23 cents on Friday of last week, leaving me annoyed. I thought the price of oil had fallen so why in the world is gas so not doing the same? The same day I got a postcard from a service station saying "You could save up to 55¢ per gallon of gasoline!" along with a list of services that would add up to the alleged savings.

What to Do When Someone Takes Your Parking Spot
From georgiana on September 17, 2008
Someone parked in my spot last week, and I was shocked by how much I resented it.

I live in a condo, and we all have designated parking spots with our addresses painted in them, making it fairly easy to figure out which space belongs to which unit. I wasn't so much annoyed at the driver since we all make mistakes, but I gave that car a look that should have made its paint peel. I shouldn't be so petty. It’s not like there wasn't an open spot at the end of my block, but in my defense I was coming home from the laundry in the middle of Tropical Storm Hanna and wanted to get my nice dry clothes inside while they were still nice and dry.
